NAWT Essex Announcement

Following our announcement about the future of NAWT Essex and a subsequent consultation with our employees, it is with a heavy heart we share the sad news that our centre in Little Clacton will be closing.

Unfortunately, we’ve been unable to find any charities in a viable position to take on the site and so our board of trustees have had to make this difficult decision to safeguard the future of NAWT and the animals we care for.

This is no reflection of the dedication and hard work from our team in Essex but a sad reality of the difficulties being faced by most animal charities in this extremely tough economic climate. Unfortunately, this will impact the jobs of our 10 members of staff, and we are offering them as much support as we can at this difficult time.

While the physical centre will cease operations in the coming weeks, the Trustees have listened to our team and the Essex community about the level of support needed for animal welfare in the area. In light of this, we plan to retain a staff presence in the area to work with volunteers and local groups to facilitate a community outreach programme. We will share more news on this when it launches.

The centre in Little Clacton has offered animal rescue services for nearly 30 years, having originally been set up by Ann and Reg Sims as Clacton Animal Aid. After their retirement, they passed it over to NAWT in 2011. It is with great pride that we have maintained and developed these services for the community over the last 15 years. Sadly, despite our best efforts, NAWT is no longer able to meet the rising costs of maintaining a physical presence in the area.

It’s an incredibly sad situation we find ourselves in, especially when it affects the lives of our dedicated employees and the wider community. Regrettably, we’re not alone in facing these economic pressures and have now had to take the same difficult decisions as others in the sector, to protect our financial sustainability. We hope we can continue helping the Clacton community going forward, as clearly there are so many people who strongly value our work in the area.
