In a scary year that has been both isolating and lonely for so many people, the companionship offered to us by our pets has become increasingly highlighted and celebrated.
This year, as part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge appeal where all donations will be doubled, we are raising money to pay back the debt we owe to these loyal, caring and faithful companions.
Never before have so many of us collectively felt the benefits that pets can bring to our physical and mental wellbeing.
It’s therefore only right that we help those animals who have been terribly unlucky and fallen on hard times.
Animals like 12-year-old Becky, a staffie who after living in one home her entire life, arrived at the Hertfordshire centre just before the start of lockdown in March. Her owner had sadly fallen ill and was no longer able to look after her.
After an initial assessment and medical checks, it was discovered that Becky had health issues as well. She needed treatment on her teeth and gums, which the vet said were both in a horrendous condition.
After sharing a JustGiving page on social media, the Watford team were able to raise the money they needed to pay for Becky’s treatment, thanks to the brilliant generosity of NAWT supporters.
Becky came to the centre with her lifelong friend, another elderly staffie called Zeus. But a few weeks later, Becky’s heart was broken when Zeus sadly passed away overnight whilst they shared a kennel.
With lockdown on the horizon and grieving the loss of her best friend, the team were worried Becky would remain in kennels with a low mood for weeks. Thankfully, just in the nick of time, they were able to secure a lovely foster home for her.
She spent the next few months happily in the company of her foster family, but then their circumstances changed and they could no longer keep her. Now the task for the last few weeks of her stay in foster care was to find this sweet staffie her forever home, a place where she could live out the rest of her days and enjoy the retirement she deserved.
During the summer, everyone’s wish finally came true when a local gentleman adopted Becky and gave her the happy ending she was craving. Becky is now enjoying all the love, attention and belly rubs that she needs in her new home! Everyone at NAWT is delighted that this wonderful lady will get to spend her final years in a secure and loving environment. You can watch a video of Becky’s journey here.
Stories like this are an important reminder that no matter what is happening in the human world around us, our animal friends continue to rely on us, so it is our duty to protect and care for them.
This is why NAWT’s project as part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge this year, is to continue to improve the lives of homeless animals during the Coronavirus pandemic. From midday on 1st December 2020 – until midday on 8th December 2020, every donation you make to our campaign on the Big Give website will be DOUBLED at no extra cost to you.
