It’s a sad fact that we often hear of dogs being used as breeding machines in rescue, and we see the results of this cruel trade when exhausted breeding bitches arrive in our care once they can no longer produce litters and have been thrown out when no longer considered of any use.
It’s not so frequent that we hear these horror stories in relation to cats, but it does happen. Poor Fergus, a stunning Siamese Snowshoe, arrived at NAWT following a life of neglect where he had been kept in a crate outside and abused for so long that his trust in people was diminished, almost beyond repair.
He was terribly frightened upon arrival and earning his trust was a very long and slow process. He was suffering with limited eyesight due to Nystagmus and for days he just cried and cried, breaking the hearts of everyone around him, who were so desperate to help this gorgeous boy after he had been so harshly betrayed by people.
Eventually it became clear that Fergus did trust other cats, and not only that, but he absolutely loved their company! This was a wonderful discovery, because it went a little way to explaining why he would cry so much in his own pen, and it offered a solution as to how to cure his loneliness.
Slowly but surely, Fergus did begin to put his trust back into certain people, and his luck turned around when a very special lady decided to offer him a loving home. She spent weeks and weeks visiting Fergus and gradually earning his trust before finally, the day came when he was confident enough to head off to his new and much happier future.
Your donations rescued Fergus from a life of misery and deprivation, and you helped him to see that there are so many kind people in this world who treat cats with nothing but love and affection. You changed his view of humans and made him feel safe again.
